One Mouse, One Keyboard between multiple computers
This can be accomplished in two ways, either using a software base KVM switch or an actual hardware KVM device. KVM consists of mechanical switches (Passive) and Electronic Switches (Active). Mechanical switches have buttons to switch between computers. A
disadvantages is the fact that the computer fails to recognize any devices if not plug-in prior to startup. Electronic switches simulate
a keyboard, mouse, and monitor as though they were connected. Potential problems include poor emulation where the device is not
being emulated properly.

KVM Types
I. Network based IP Software KVM switch minus the video
For use in environments that require access to multiple computer setups. It allows the sharing among other computers by using a server and adding as needed, additional clients. Supports Multiple operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android,and Apple iOS). Only a local network connection is needed.

KVM (Keyboard, Video, & Mouse) is a hardware device that allows a user to control multiple computers from one or more. A KVM switch is useful where there are multiple computers, but no need for a dedicated keyboard, monitor, and mouse. They are mainly used in data centers where multiple servers are place in a single rack with a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse. In a HOME environment is where a full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor of a home PC with a portable device such as a laptop, tablet PC or a computer using a different OS, such as a Macintosh.
Different Classes of KVM switchesUSB Hub Based KVM (If you KVM switch does not allow you to switch ports/channels by hitting the hot-key combinations, then you have a HUB class KVM switch).
Emulated USB KVM (There is no a specifically assigned USB port that you can plug your keyboard into for the hot key commands).
Semi-DDM Class (causes delays (but are short in duration) when switching between different ports. However, DDM switch have no latency (no delay) in switching between ports/channels. They are cheaper in cost since there are no DDM chips within each port/channel of the KVM switch.
DDM Class (each channel is equipped with a DDM chip (at least two extra DDM chips per port/channel). This is the reason why True DDM class switches cost much more than all other classes of KVM switches).
The “type” you choose will depend on the use and the cost factor. The disadvantage with KVM is that it’s another piece of hardware and it is limited to one computer at a time as you switch between the computers.
The evaluation will consist of what device you need to control, and any compatibility issues in regards to the computer and devices.
It is possible to share a single computer with multiple users and does not require any network interface. The video signal is shared by using a graphic card with the capability of supporting more then one monitor or by way of a splitter. This allows both monitors to display identical video content. The keyboard, and mouse will use the available USB ports on your computer. If needed a USB hub to add the availability of additional USB ports.
