E-mail along with other social media as become part of our everyday life. It is important to know the options available to you when choosing an E-mail service and the type of client used to access your messages. Because there are so many e-mail client to choose from it sometime difficult in knowing which is best for you. E-mail clients support different types of operating systems. Some are basic and simply facilitate the sending and receiving of messages. Others are more elaborate offering many features and are highly customizable. Custom Computer Consulting will assist you in determining the appropriate e-mail account that suits you need. You may have already selected a client and need only help in setting up the program to send and receive message from you e-mail provider. In either case Custom Computer Consulting can assist you in getting your E-mail up and running for you.

E-mail Protocols:

Internet Message Access Protocol
Post Office Protocol 3
SMTP - (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
HTTP - (is not a e-mail protocol) but can be used to access your e-mail messages.

Each of these E-mail protocols serve a purpose. SMTP is a stranded protocol and used to send outbound mail to a designated server. While IMAP and POP3 are used to retrieve from the e-mail server your messages. What is difference between IMAP and POP3 is the method in which the software interacts with the server. Not all IP e-mail providers offer IMAP protocol as many are not
being replaced with any other free service as well as any paid services. IMAP and POP3 are standard protocol for access e-mail from you local servers. The difference between IMAP and POP3 is how your messages are handled. In some cases a combination of both POP3 and IMAP may be used to suite the client specific usage. Custom Computer Consulting will aid you in determining the appropriate protocol to suite your needs.

IMAP vs. POP3 protocol
IMAP is a client/server protocol in which your e-mail is received and held for you by e-mail service provider. You can also create and manipulate folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, etc.

Advantages:

Requires small amount of data to be stored on smart devices
Retrieves only message you requested
You can create multiple folders or mailbox on the server, delete message, and etc

Disadvantages:

Many Internet Providers do not off this protocol

POP3 is a simple but standardized. It allows users to access their mailboxes and download messages to their computers. When using this method all your messages are downloaded from the mail server to your local drive. You can choose to leave a copy as well or have the message expire (delete) after a specified period of time.

Advantages:

Does not require you to have to the internet.. You can read messages from your local computer.

Disadvantages:

You may want all the messages
Some could have implanted viruses or malware attached to the messages.

Important

PLEASE REMEMBER to have available at time of service all necessary information in regards to e-mail service, username and passwords associated with any e-mail accounts. Also, any registration codes needed to install e-mail clients. If you are new to E-mail and it is provided by your Internet Provider, be sure to have all information regards to your account number, user name, and password assignments.

Types of E-Mail
What is E-mail, (electronic mail) plays a valuable part in your internet experience but how do access them? There are programs known as e-mail clients that are intended to access remote mail serves and retrieve mail from them. e-mail clients allow you to compose and send e-mail message as well as a host of other features. There are a host of e-mail clients to choose. Some are very similar while others have features. Many of our clients use the standard outlook as it comes with the operating system and is ready to use.

E-mail Client
The advantage of an e-mail Client is the fact that you do need to have access to the internet. It is only needed when you wish to send and receive a message. Also depending on the configuration it will allow to retain message on both your e-mail server as well as your computer device.

Web Based E-mail Clients
The other from to obtain e-mail is what is known as (integrated) web based e-mail clients. The advantage is all message are stored off-site and computers are less vulnerable to virus attacks. You access your mail via the internet web browser anywhere in the world. Also, you do not need to know or setup your (POP or IMAP).

The disadvantage is that you will need to have internet access all the time while composing and reading a message. Also, the web based clients are limited to the features in that of the e-mail client software. Some internet providers (i.e. Time Warner / Roadrunner, and Verzion) offer both web based e-mail client access as well as the standard access by e-mail client software (POP or IMAP). This feature allows you store information both on an off-site mail servers and your local computer -- providing a backup salutation in the event your computer crashes or you delete a message accidentally.

There are other sites that provide you with web based e-mail client access. Most are FREE but offer subscriber services that allow additional features, such as the ability to send and receive e-mail by way of e-mail client software.

These sites can be very tricky to set up within the e-mail client software as some require additional perimeters to send and receive e-mail There are many forms to choose. They range from web interface based access (i.e. Yahoo, Google (gmail), Microsoft (msn, live)) software installation on your computer.

EXTRA SECURITY REQUIREMENTS
For those desiring an additional security we offer security applications, such as PGP, which when added to your e-mail program. It will allow you and your receipting to send encrypted messages and files to each other without the fear of anyone being able to read it. Even attachment can be encrypted such as documentation, images, and applications.

Other devices as well can now access e-mail. They include blackberries, smart phones, I-pads. e-mail is usually obtained from your internet providers. If you decided to use an e-mail program it will be necessary to set up a series of perimeters that will allow you to send and receive e-mail

However, there are other alternatives available, other than those provided by your provider. Many of them support both web based interfaces as well as the conventional e-mail client of sending and receiving messages. Some are free while others with subscription fees provide a host of features from web interface access to polling your mail. If you choose this method we can assist you and those other resources.
